“Free Speech” and Doing No Harm

A Look at Cyber-harassment and Our Responsibility “If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”    George Washington Although it is not enshrined in our Australian Constitution, as it is in the First Amendment in the United States, the right to “free speech” is regarded as a most fundamental and inherent right for all in this country.  It is at the very core of …

Freedom of the Press – a pressing issue

I am sitting on the plane writing this as I return to Australia following a visit to the UK. Next week, Lord Justice Leveson is due to publish his findings and recommendations following an extensive review into the British media. As I boarded my flight home, I picked up a copy of the UK Mail on Sunday. The entire front page had a huge screaming headline “Cameron set to defy Leveson over new press laws”. …

There are many brave war correspondents who risk their lives to expose genocide, rape and other crimes against humanity. There are specialist journalists who report on scientific research and provide health education to the benefit of all. I have read reports where people describe why they became a journalist. …

Let’s speak up!

There are plenty of stories on the web that expose the appalling abuse and misuse of power by certain members of the media. You only have to do a few Google searches to realise that this a systemic problem which causes great hurt and harm. I refer not just to the publication of outright lies and manipulations but also to the irresponsible way that the media portray women and insidiously influence the way we feel …
